SW20 is broadcast direct from Mamhilad Park Estate. It’s a community-based radio station run by a team of 30 plus volunteers who feature a variety of music for all ages from country classics to 80s pop and current chart hits. The station hosts live shows at key times but also has a 24 hour stream.
Established by co-founders Barrie Jones and Chris Jones in the summer of 2020, the station is growing from strength to strength. SW20 are hosting school trips and have also launched a project for local schools called DJ4aDay. It’s a six-week programme that teaches pupils about radio and the media.
Barrie and Chris explain: “It’s all about the community for us. We had a vision of creating a radio station that appeals to everyone in the local community and brings communities together. That’s why we play such a mix of music and we get involved in local activities.
“Our link with local schools is supplemented by our partnership Basketball Wales, Trethomas Football Club, Cwmbran Tennis Club and New Inn under 11’s Football team. We’re also gearing up to support Cancer Research UK’s Relay for Life in Pontypool on June 18th with entertainment on the day and a silent disco.
Volunteer Rosie Fish adds: “None of this would be possible without our amazing volunteers. Together, we’re creating a real community radio spirit from hour home here at Mamhilad Park Estate.”
